View From the Driver's Seat:
When you read the articles about races, it just doesn't paint the same picture as being in
the race car....so this week we've added a new segment called "View
from the Driver's Seat."
The EROC race looked to be a good one. There was even a new
driver, Todd "Bubba the Love Sponge" Clem, who some of you may
know as a popular DJ whose radio show is syndicated in many cities. Late
in the week the race time was changed so practice, qualifying and
racing all happened between 2 and 5:30 PM during the heat of the
day.
We were third to qualify at 4PM and set a fast time of 22.63, the
only car under 23 seconds. That held till the last car set a 22.58
to unseat us from the pole. As
it turned out, our tires responded poorly to the heat cycles from the practice and
qualifying runs and the car tightened up. We developed a
terrible push and could never drive the car more than 3/4 throttle in
order to get through the turns. From the outside pole we fell into
second place, then third, and finally fourth by the end of the
race. Those of you who know us and have heard the stories of the
many mistakes we made in our early years learning about setting up a
race car will appreciate Aaron's statement after the race. "Dad,
even on our worst day, we never had a car that handled as bad as this
one!" Let's hope a new set of tires and some attention
from the Executive Racing School staff can remedy the situation before
the next race. |
