2002 EROC Race #4
USA International Speedway

 View From The Driver's Seat:
On May 17th the EROC staff conducted a 20 lap test to try to determine the cause of the wheel hop and push that developed in the last race, making handling almost impossible in the late stages of the April race.
During the 20 lap test we ran four consecutive laps of exactly 22.83 demonstrating driver consistency. Push developed at the end of the test again.  The car was checked out mechanically by the staff and reported 100% sound.
Driver's are not permitted to adjust set up to the EROC cars because they are equally prepared, so the test results were inconclusive.  We decided to try new tires for the June 1 race in hopes that a change in tires would reduce or eliminate the problem.
During the ten lap practice on race day, we were running in the 22.60's and 22.70's so our hopes were high. The car drove well in the two lap qualifying session.  We had the fastest first lap qualifying speed (22.683) and hoped for the pole, but we missed our mark going into the first turn and the second lap was not as good.   We started 3rd.
By lap fifteen the wheel hop and push appeared again and by lap twenty had progressed to the point we were not able to hold the car down in turns three and four.  By lap 27 we were not able to keep it low in turns 1 and 2 either.  From that point on we were just putting in time because we couldn't be competitive at all.  We were letting off the throttle just past the start finish to get through the turn.
We finished 5th.  Following the race, other drivers also reported wheel hop and push issues so it now appears to be a set up problem.
