Ignition Modules

Screamin' Eagle by Harley-Davidson

Performance and Technical information on ignition modules for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Screamin' Eagle

The Screamin' Eagle ignition system comes in several different variations. The original Screamin' Eagle module had an external Rev Limiter that was required to set the RPM limits below the modules preset 8000 RPM limit. There is now a 6000 RPM street module for Big Twin engines that is  50 states, emissions legal and the original 'race only' unit. The modules replaces the stock HD ignition module, requiring only that it be plugged into the stock wiring harness.

While Bike Tech does not have before and after comparisons for the stock HD module vs. Screaming module(s), it does have experience with the new 6000 RPM street module. This module has provided good service on a 1997 FXD equipped with a modified CV carburetor, Screamin' Eagle Air Cleaner and Harley-Davidson slash cut slip-on mufflers. Power for this engine combination is 64 HP at the rear wheels, up from a stock 54 HP.

In the same 1997 FXD, adding an Andrews EV-46 raised the power to 74 HP at the rear wheels. This only confirms our recommendation that the Screamin' Eagle ignition module is a best buy for street and mildly modified engines.

In yet another improvement to the 1997 FXD, the Screamin' Eagle ignition module performed was used with a set of the new Screamin' Eagle 1340 Evolution performance heads. The FXD's ignition performed flawlessly while producing 82 rear wheel horsepower. While it would have been nice to have a rev limiter greater than 6000 RPMs for a Stage 3 engine, the SE module was designed for street use where the 6000 RPM limit makes good sense.

The Screamin' Eagle Part numbers for 1340 engines are:

  • 96 and Later 1340 models ...32630-96
  • 94-95 FLH/FLT models ...32595-96
  • 84-95 1340 models ...32596-96

The list price for all the modules is $114.95.

We Highly Recommend the use of this module with stock and mildly modified bikes. The cost of this module is low and the performance is excellent.
