Holding Cylinders in place
The heads are off your bike. You want to check your cylinder bores and
remove carbon from the tops of the pistons. You lock the transmission in top
gear and move the bike. The next think you know, the pistons have moved, but the
cylinders barrels have lost contact with the case and are dangling in the air.
You keep pushing the cylinder bores back into place as the pistons move to TDC.
The cylinders can be held in place with wing nuts available at any
local hardware store. Two 3/8" wing nuts on each cylinder will keep
everything in place while doing any other work needed.
Measuring deck height is simple with the cylinder bores held in place
this way. If your base gasket is not compressed, make sure you know what the
crushed height of the base gasket is.
